Founded in 1931, Boxing News was established as the UK’s main trade paper for the sport and has since remained at the forefront of boxing journalism ever since. The magazine was sold to a syndicate of London sportsmen in October 1931 who installed Sydney Rushton as editor. His attempt to run the publication as a newspaper, cutting popular features and reducing news stories to the shortest possible length, proved a disaster and the circulation slumped to its lowest point. Billy Masters, a city printer and boxing fan, saved the magazine in January 1933 and appointed W. H. Miller as editor. The magazine returned to its newspaper format and began to prosper once again.

In November 1996, the magazine was sold again, this time to a group of Yorkshire businessmen who appointed assistant editor Claude Abrams as its new editor. BN became more comprehensive in its coverage, and shifted to full colour. In March 1999 it switched to A3 size before reverting to its original, smaller A4 format in September 2005.
In 2024, BN launched the Boxing News app, a free, interactive digital platform that merges a prediction league with live scorecard functionality. Earlier in the year, BN also teamed up with streaming service BoxNation to produce the first live stream of a British professional fight at Wembley’s SSE Arena.
