Many diesel mechanic specialists get their start in the field with a high school diploma or equivalent and then pursue hands-on education at a vocational school or earn an associate degree in diesel repair and service technology. Some also look for apprenticeship programs to learn the craft through direct experience with established diesel mechanics and reduce the time needed to complete their educational requirements.

Technicians need to be comfortable with a variety of tools and machinery and have strong troubleshooting skills to identify problems.
